A southern Alberta staffing and recruitment firm has been recognized on the national stage for its community service.

Earlier this month, SELECT People Solutions received the 2012 Community Service Award from the Association of Canadian Search, Employment & Staffing Services (ACSESS) at the national conference in Niagara Falls.

According to the criteria established by ACSESS, the community service award is presented to a member company showing extraordinary commitment and concern for their community. ‘The company and its employees must be involved in public service activities that return value to the community by supporting charities, educational and other community groups,’ states the nomination form.

“We are extremely proud of this accomplishment,” says SELECT owner Ryan Miller. “This award shows that impact on the community is not determined by business’ size. Local businesses know their clientele, their community and their workforce; and they can pull together the resources that lead to success.”

In previous years, the community service award went to large national staffing firms like Manpower, Randstad and Bowen.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of teamwork in winning this award,” says Miller. “The entire staff can honestly share in this.”

Part of the SELECT’s community service award centred on their ‘23 Days of Christmas’ fundraising campaign for Meals on Wheels. SELECT partnered with Cuppers Coffee and Crazy Cakes and garnered sponsorship from dozens of local businesses to see that Meals on Wheels is financially supported through the Holidays.

“We began the ’23 Days of Christmas’ campaign in 2009 because, like us, Meals on Wheels is a small organization but they have a sizeable impact on the community,” says Miller. “Our staff not only supported the campaign during work-hours, but they and their families also volunteered their free time toward this worthy cause.”

In the three years the 23 Days of Christmas campaign has run, more than $75,000 has gone to Meals on Wheels.

It was also SELECT’s work with local organizations and providing professional development for staff that helped convince the ACSESS awards committee.

SELECT is involved with many local organizations including: International Association of Administrative Professionals, Executive Women International, Human Resource Management Association of Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Home Builders Association and Lethbridge College.

SELECT has also assisted several non-profit organizations by providing senior level recruitments and human resources consulting for Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Lethbridge, Boys and Girls Club, and New West Theatre, to name a few.

“By doing what we can to help the local non-profit sector, the entire southern Alberta community benefits and we benefit as a result,” says Miller.

“We do good work, hold to high ethical standards and we function best when we support each other,” says Lettie Croskery, Manager of SELECT Professional Division. “Ryan is our true visionary and our ‘idea guy’ but he doesn’t operate independently. He leads by example and we follow that lead.”

Located in Lethbridge, Alberta, SELECT People Solutions was founded in 1998 as a division of Teamwork Training Ltd. (1991). The focus of SELECT is on creating innovative recruiting, staffing and hr solutions for businesses.
