Welcome to our Select summer ag projects! What does Roguing mean? It’s actually walking through southern Alberta fields, picking “rogue plants” that don’t belong in that field. It sounds simple, but this work is a critical step of growing the parent canola seed that will be planted next year.
Why do we rogue?
-
Machines damage canola plants at this stage
-
Each field is government inspected to ensure the field is free of these unwanted weeds
What does a day look like?
-
Outside work, in all kinds of summer weather
-
Walking through uneven and sometimes muddy fields, for long distances
-
Pulling plants, which requires bending, gripping and pulling
-
Starting early in the morning, typically at 6:00am
-
The roguing season can last anywhere from 2-5 weeks
