It’s too expensive to hire the wrong person, so spend the time upfront to minimize your risk. Consider some of these tips to get it right the first time!
Underestimated References
Companies often overlook the value of references. This is where you can turn over a rock in specific areas you are really looking to dive into. Consider doing reference checks early, rather than leaving them until the end of the process as a “checkbox.”
References can provide insight into a candidate’s work ethic, skills, and experiences from someone who has already worked with them in a professional setting. Read between the lines while talking to references. If something feels off, forget your “script” – dig deeper to satisfy your spidey senses.
The magical question of “would you hire them again?” is very informative. Was the answer a quick yes or was there hesitation? Please don’t overlook the importance of references!
Know Your Strengths & Weaknesses as a Manager
So often we lean towards hiring someone just like us – this is not always the best, even though I know you’re awesome! 😊 Look for someone who COMPLIMENTS you or the person that will be managing them. For me, that would be someone who is organized (because I’m not), someone who is good at data entry (because I’m not), and someone who loves processes (because I don’t). Together, it makes us a whole team!
Assessments
Nowadays, so many assessments exist to test different skills, abilities and competencies. Use trusted assessments – and you know what? Select People Solutions has some! Hey – can you blame the shameless plug? This is our business!
Assessments don’t always highlight the superstars, but they can certainly raise flags. You want to learn as much as you can about the candidate before inviting them into your family.
Be Engaged & Honest
“Playing it cool” may result in you losing good candidates. If you’re interested in an applicant, show it. Once you know who you want to join you team, don’t delay presenting a job offer. Playing down your interest in an effort to maximize negotiations may kill candidate’s interest. Let them know you see their value and you want them as part of your team. The way you treat them in the interview and hiring process shows how you will treat them as an employee – candidates aren’t the only ones who need to make their best impression!
Clear & Frequent Communication
Communicate with your candidates! It’s the professional thing to do, plus it’s pretty hypocritical to expect great communication from your candidates (and employees) if your communication is lacking. The key to a positive candidate experience is good communication – keep them informed about their status in the screening process.
